Tuesday Tips: Viewing Vulnerability as Courage
How do you define vulnerability, and what does it feel like for you? Our collective definitions may vary slightly, but as a whole we can probably agree that we grew up learning that this word had a negative connotation.
Why should your understanding of vulnerability matter? According to Dr. Brené Brown, a researcher and storyteller, “Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability, and authenticity. If we want greater clarity in our purpose or deeper and more meaningful spiritual lives, vulnerability is the path.”
All of these are important values for us to have as women to flourish in our careers and relationships. What stands in the way of us leaning into vulnerability, of accepting that it is an act of courage?
According to Dr. Brown, there are four myths that are important to debunk in order to move forward in embracing vulnerability; vulnerability is weakness, we can opt out of vulnerability, vulnerability is over sharing, we can practice vulnerability in isolation.
In her book, Daring Greatly, Brown shares the entrepreneurial journey of Gay Gaddis, an entrepreneur who has built the nation’s largest advertising agency wholly owned by women. Gaddis said, “When you shut down vulnerability, you shut down opportunity.” She finished her interview with Brown by adding that entrepreneurship is all about vulnerability. Every single day.

“Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage.”
Dr. Brown will be speaking at The Paramount Theater in Seattle Thursday September 21.
