Tip Tuesday: Do Nothing On Purpose

When was the last time you did absolutely nothing? On purpose.

For many of us, our days involve running from meeting to meeting, hopping on call after call, with little down time. Research shows that practicing mindfulness for as little as 10 minutes per day can reduce stress, lessen anxiety, combat depression, and increase cognition and focus. Now, raise your hand if you need any of that in your life.

Andy Puddicombe, the co-founder of Headspace, a mindfulness and meditation app, shares the gloomy observation that we are so distracted that we are no longer present with our world.

“I thought it was like an aspirin for the mind. You get stressed, you do some meditation. I didn't realize that it could actually be preventative.”

He shares research from Harvard that found that our minds are lost in thought almost 47% of the time. As you consider that statistic, what do you think the consequences of that are for your career, goals, family, and your own well-being?
